The Middle Of Winter
Some say that when you are in an Iowan winter, you better get use to un-tamely weather. One day it is 45 degrees and sunny, the next day it is -20 and a blizzard. There is much to be said about the winters in the Midwest. For one, being Iowa born, I am quite used to the fact that winters will run your patience thin and leave you longing for spring time.
After the holidays have come and gone, after all the gifts have been opened and family has returned home. I feel mostly relief from the pressures of preparation and the unspoken requirement to eat great grandma's fruit cake (at least one bite). When the pies, cookies, candy, and remaining sweets are all eaten, the holidays leave me sitting there stuffed in my next size up holiday sweater.
But for me there is a sidetrack I can take from all my holiday rushing, worrying, and eating. A little bit of photography goes a long way in stress relief. This 25th of December, I found myself quite free of care in the evening winter weather warning. I decided while all the neighborhood folks are tucked in next to the fire watching movies and what not. I would venture out in to the fresh sparkling snow and get me a few new shots.
Each snow flake that fell was shimmering with the freshness of the new year that is quickly closing in upon us. No footsteps on the sidewalks. No disturbed yards. All the cars still covered with that blanket of fresh snow. The only movement in Des Moines' downtown was the determination of bar patrons enjoying a holiday drink with fellow snow bunnies.
The east village of Des Moines' downtown was quite beautiful in the fresh snow, green, blue, and red lights adorned rows of trees. Storefronts still festive from the shopping season and holiday ordainments still swinging in the snowy winds.
I hope you enjoy my new holiday pictures on my site.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Happy New Year.

Spending time with family during the holidays is a good way to reconnect. I actually love my grandmother's fruitcake! We all sit outside on our heated patio furniture and sip hot cocoa.

The secret is to cook the aubergines the day before and let them dry of all the oil they drank in cooking. When you cook aubergine, they eat a lot of oil. It can be very heavy.
